Melissa is an educational leader committed to bringing high quality, equitable educational experiences to students from rural communities in North Carolina. Melissa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Rochester and received her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, with a concentration in K-12 Science Education, at George Mason University. Melissa taught middle school science with a focus on inquiry-based learning in both rural and urban, traditional public and charter schools before pursuing her Masters in School Administration. MELISSA IS A FELLOW IN THE JOHNSTON PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
The Johnston Principal Leadership Academy (JPLA) will work with Johnston County Public Schools in Smithfield, North Carolina. A grant from the state of NC through the North Carolina Alliance for School Leadership Development (NCASLD) funds JPLA, including full scholarships for JPLA’s Fellows. JPLA was modeled after NC State’s nationally recognized Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA). NELA earned the honor of being named an Exemplary Educational Leadership Program by the University Council for Educational Administration.
