PROBLEM OF PRACTICE
My problem of practice was focused on working to help Henderson Collegiate staff and students learn more about the impact of trauma on child development and working with teachers to incorporate more trauma informed practices into their daily work. Students, particularly those who have experienced one or more adverse childhood experiences, have difficulty self-regulating in school, which manifests in disruptive classroom behaviors. This occurrence was observed frequently during my first days observing and shadowing students during my Principal Residency, which took place at a school that services a largely low income community. The observation of these frequent disruptive behaviors from distressed students, led to numerous challenging situations for teachers to manage throughout the day and a decreased ability for impacted students to learn when they were in states of distress.
Based on these observations, I formulated a vision for my problem of practice. By the end of the school year, teachers will be able to identify moments of their own dysregulation when working with distressed students and employ an effective resetting strategy before addressing the struggling student. Students will be able to learn the power of resetting own their nervous system, practice breathing techniques, and begin to recognize moments they are out of their resilience zone. Students will also begin to widen their resiliency zone through daily biofeedback sessions.
My logic model, Ingite presentation pitch, final poster and final Ignite presentation are linked below.
